All Themes Updated for WordPress 3.0

If you were wondering why the blog has been a bit quieter this month, it’s because we have been busy integrated/localizing all themes and updating them for the new version of WordPress. Today I am pleased to announce that all of our themes have been updated for the release of WordPress 3.0. Any bugs that we have experienced have been ironed out, and we have also been sure to integrate 3.0′s new features, such as the new Nav Menu system. I am also excited about what the additional of custom post types will mean for future themes, and will surely be creating some new and innovative designs in the near future! In fact, our next theme, LightBright, should put them to good use.

Nav Menu System

The new nav menu system added in 3.0 will make creating custom navigation menus quick and easy. It allows you to define custom orders to your links, add/remove links, and even link to external pages. When you install a theme, the pages/categories navigation bars will work just as they always have. These will automatically be populated with your pages/categories links, and they can be managed via the ePanel Theme Options page. However, if you decide to define a custom nav menu via the new nav menu feature, you can choose to replace your default nav bars with it. For each theme we have defined each “navigation area,” which can be seen when you create a new nav menu.

When you create a new menu, you will see different “Theme Locations” where you can place it. The above example is for TheSource, in which there are three possible areas to place your menu. The primary menu (the default pages links on the top of the page), secondary menu (the default categories bar), and the footer menu. Once you have finished making your navbar, simply choose where you want it to appear from the dropdown menu. You can delete your custom navigation bars at any time and your theme will revert back to their default pages/categories links.

ePanel Updates

Along with 3.0 changes we have made several improvements to ePanel. Most of them, however, are behind the scenes code changes that may go unnoticed visually, but I can assure you that we are always thinking about ways to improve ePanel’s functionality.

Using Excerpts For Posts – One notable addition is the ability to define custom excerpts for each post. Until now, all post previews have been generated automatically. This makes things easy, and avoids potential problems, but also limits functionality. Now, you have the choice the define a post excerpt which, if available, will replace the automatic truncation. What this creates, however, is a responsibility on the user’s part to create excerpts that make sense for the theme. For example, if default post previews are 200 characters long and all posts are uniform, then adding a 1000 character post excerpt would not be ideal. To use excerpts you must first enable the feature via ePanel, under the General Settings tab.

  1. Does it mean that we have to reinstall our theme? What about the translation / character size and other modification we did?

      • Yes, you will need to re-download and re-upload the theme. Several files had to be updated to become compatible with 3.0. Of course you can always keep using your current version of the theme/WordPress. Your customized css files should be fine though, those don’t need to be updated.

        • Hi Nick,

Just wondering if I can upgrade to WP 3.0 and not upgrade my theme? I am running Quadro 1.0.

I don’t have any immediate plans of taking advantage of 3.0′s new features. But I want some of the security upgrades.

          Thanks!

          Les

          • This may cause errors. If you don’t want to upgrade the theme then I would suggest not upgrading WordPress.

          • Okay – Thanks Nick. This is what I thought. But Iw anted you to weigh in on things.

            Les

  2. Have all the themes in the member download section been updated do we need to re-download them ?

    • Yes, they have all been updated. If you want to update to the latest version you should re-download/re-upload the theme.

  3. How can we tell if the re-upload has been successful?

  4. Good stuff…especially since WordPress 3.0 just got released!!!

  5. Thanks for all your hard and dedicated work, Nick! Just got the notification today of official 3.0 release and came here to find you are right on the ball. :)

  6. WordPress 3.0 come up with really cool features, thank for the news :)

  7. WordPress 3.0 is powerfull.
WordPress 3.0 “Thelonious” is the best

  8. Congratulations for the nice upgrade!

  9. Awesom job guys. From my side, thanks for all your hard work in getting the themes ready for wordpress 3.0. Can’t wait to see your next releases.

  10. But how about changes I made to my theme.. for example logo or smth like that? I think by uploading new version my changes will be lost?

    • Good question! Had that problem with my last theme update. Please advise which files need to be backed up and re-uploaded after the theme was updated. I’m using Lumin.

      • I made some pretty hefty changes to 13thFloor, mostly in header.php, footer.php and css changes. All I did was keep the old files, uploaded the updated theme. Then I simply replaced the css as no changes were made there and re-added my adjusted code segmants the php files I edited. Worked perfectly.

  11. I’ve customized the 13floor template a bit for my current install. Are there many internal changes to the templates themselves with the 3.0 upgrade?

Most of the none cosmetic changes are with how the featured php file works.

    • We have been working on updating the themes all month. Luckily we finished just in time :)

  12. I have a question considering backward compatibility? I am using a WP2.9.x installation. If I download a theme now from the site, do I have to upgrade to WP3 for the theme to work?

If the current themes are not backward-compatible, would it be possible to create a package that contains the latest releases of all themes still compatible with WP2.9.x?

  13. Have they been updated to support Child themes? Particularly the functions.php?

  14. Hi Nick!

    I’m using ephoto and 13floor.

Which files should I back up to mantain customized my theme? I won’t do it twice :S

All the edited css files? No problem?

    Thanks!

  15. Good work indeed, and timely of course! :)

One word for everyone with worries about your custom changes, go to http://winmerge.org/ and use their software to compare the changes. Upgrading with custom changes is always tedious, but this program is one of the easiest to use and will help greatly.

  16. Ok, weird, I did a complete fresh install of the theme and the plugins but when I try to use the Basic theme I get this msg appearing on the homepage of my site:

    No Results Found

The page you requested could not be found. Try refining your search, or use the navigation above to locate the post.

    But other themes work fine.
Followed the install instructions for Basic to the dot.

    • Please open a thread in the support forum if you need assistance.

        • Hi, i’m having same problem, where you able to solve it? please let me know.

          Thanks a lot.

          • If you need help with anything, please open a ticket in our support forums so that our team can assist you.

  17. fyi CherryTruffle worked fine; but I do like Basic better XD

  18. That’s why we Love U Nick! Thanks for all upgrades!

  19. Hello Nick,

What about those members before that are not members anymore and still using your themes as of now?

    • You must have an active membership to retain access to the member’s area and all new themes/theme updates. It’s the membership fee that allows us to continue to upgrade and improve the themes indefinitely.

  20. Thanks a ton for the SUPER value you provide with your subscription.

Is it possible that we can update themes just like we update our Plug-ins, from within wordpress?

    Many thanks

  21. Any news on the “MyApp Theme” ?

  22. I have tested few themes and seems very simple work….i have done some custom modifications in one wp blog theme, i need to check if those modifications are on same places and lines in new themes or files are changed also

  23. Hi Nick
You’ve done a great job updating the ePanel and the themes for WP 3.0 but the thought of having to upload revised theme and then go through all the customisation depresses me somewhat.
It would be great if all the customisation could be saved somewhere ready to be applied to updated theme.
    Just a thought.

    • I second Keith’s thought and idea. I just think that it’s a lot of hassle to go through all the changes one made over a couple of months (or even years).

Upgrading it through the dashboard would be the easiest and I guess the most secure way as well.

  24. Hi,

Lovin your theme and although on recent post on your Support Forum remains unanswered, I’ve customized Lumin to get the functionality I’m after.

I’ve made some pretty extensive changes, not only the style.css file, which has nearly 80% of it modified, but also changes to the Homepage_Content, Featured, Default, Index, Footer, comments, functions, scripts, home, page, and sidebar & sidebars files.

I’m pretty sure I do NOT have the 3.0 updated files, although I’m not experiencing any errors after upgrading to WP3.0.

    So, 2 questions:

    1) Is there a version number somewhere so I can determine if I have the updated theme or not?

    2) Can you supply a proper changelog or list of the files / list of the code that was changed for Lumin? The lumin changelog on your site is blank.

The site is still in development but I’ve been steadily working on it for about 7-10 days now. I don’t want to lose the changes I’ve made but do want to add the new Menu functionality to the site. That’s about the only thing I’ve been unhappy with is the navbar.

I also hacked the code and used plugins to obtain the excerpt functionality you seem to have added. And I even hacked the ePanel to add additional content blocks via the dropdown on the front page. Each front page story also carries 3 headlines now, one for the home, one for the nav and one for the search engines. I’ve also linked the H3s in the featured slider.

    • All of the themes come with a changelog file, so you can check it to see if you have the 3.0 version or not.

      • The change log inside the ZIP file says only:

        version 1.6:
Updated ePanel to account for WordPress 3.0.

It doesn’t specify which files were changed.

  25. So…

I went through all the files and checked modify dates. Only 4 files outside of the ePanel folder were changed and I went through line-by-line to check for changes and made sure my modifications carried over to the new files.

The only one I don’t know what you changed is the Style.css file. I’ve modded mine so much it seems irrelevant now. But, out of curiosity, what was changed in the stylesheet?

Also, I was surprised that you had not overhauled the comments.php file to use 3.0′s new comment_form() function.

Any plans to do that and simplify things?

    • +1

    • ups, sorry… I made a mistake. I shouldn’t post that comment for this forum

  26. What a nice upgrade. However it will take a lot of time for me to update my modified code.
    Thanks.

  27. I am wondering if it supports the multi-site on wordpress 3.0, it must make sure it won’t mess things up when one theme used by multi-user with different configurations. Thanks!

  28. Thanks, my web works great now!

  29. The “Description Text on Homepage” (top left corner) wont show up in internet explorer. Its there when u highlight it but doesnt show up otherwise. the colour of the text merges it with the background so u cant see it. Is there some sort of fix for this? i see there are css files for IE 6,7 and 8 but for some reason they arent working?

    • If you need help, please open a thread in the support forum.

  30. Sorry Nick, but the Minimal Theme seems to have a problem with WordPress 3.02 and manual excerpts. I already enable the option on Epanel but still doesn’t work.

Please let me know if I’m wrong about this.

    Best regards.

PS. By the way, your themes rocks!

    • Please open a thread in the support forum and we will be happy to assist you.

  31. Hey Nick,

About the upgrades you’ve made to the Themes i was wondering, is there any way i can update just a part of the mine.

I mean i would like to use the ePanel, the shortcodes plugin and the new comment form. That’s pretty much all i need for my eBusiness theme. Though , i have some concerns in re-download & update the theme cause of the changes i’ve made to it.

Is the desig of the theme going to change after re-uploading the update ?

    Thanks a lot.

    Best regards,
    Alex

  32. All of the themes come with a changelog file, so you can check it to see if you have the 3.0 version or not.

  33. Hi, I Just updated the theme of on of my blogs but the customization that I made where all cancelled by new files, title included. Not too bad because I did a little on that theme.

But I also have a professional blog (I have got clients going on there) where I made (with you big help) lots of customizations on the css files.

How can update the theme without lost the customizations?

  34. İ need the minimalist theme for adsense but i can’t find a hit theme..
