Product Licensing Requirements

All products submitted to the marketplace must be licensed under the GPL version 2 or later. This is the open source license used by WordPress and by Divi. It’s important to the open source community that we honor the WordPress license and give our customers the same freedoms they provided us. This means that not only does the work you create need to be licensed under the GPL, but all third part code, software, graphics, photos and illustrations must also be GPL compatible. You can find a list of GPL compatible software licensed here. WordPress has a great article on GPL compatible photo/graphics licenses here.

Required License.txt File For All Products

All products submitted to the marketplace must include a license.txt file. This file must follow a specific format and it must include a list of all third party files that you have included in the product so that we can verify that they are GPL compatible. This includes listing all code snippets, CSS files, JS files, photos, illustrations and anything else that you downloaded from an external source.

Photos From Unsplash, Pixabay and Pexels Are Not Allowed

This will be frustrating for many sellers due to how popular these websites are. Unfortunately, their restrictive licenses are not GPL compatible. Furthermore, their restrictions on selling unaltered copies of photos poses a problem for commercial WordPress Themes and Divi Layouts (most of which include unaltered copies of photos as part of the design). We are following WordPress’s lead here and not allowing photos from these websites (and others) in marketplace products. All photos, graphics and illustrations must either be created by you, or they must be licensed under the CC0 or CC BY 4.0.

There are some great sources for photos licensed under the CC0 which we recommend using instead:
