New Theme: TheSource

People have been asking me to create a Magazine-style theme, as well as a 3-column theme, for some time now. With TheSource I hope to satisfy those many users. TheSource is a Magazine-style theme that combines flashiness with sophistication. The goal behind this theme was to create a design that could display loads of content in an organized and visually pleasing manner. The three-column grid gives you increased control over your layout, and the full-width homepage slider creates a visual impact that is sure to peek your visitor’s interest. For more information you can view the Live Demo, or visit the Features Page.

TheSource Features Overview

1. Four Unique Colorschemes - If you don’t like the standard Dark color of TheSource, then you may enjoy the alternate/lighter Grey, Blue and Red versions.

2. Three-column Layout – TheSource features a three-column layout, which gives you plenty of room to manage your sidebar widgets.

3. Widgetized Footer – The footer of TheSource has been widgetized and separated into 4 columns, giving you plenty of widget-ready room for all of your favorite plugins.

4. Homepage Category Boxes – These four boxes feature the latest posts from your favorite categories on the homepage.

I think the design turned out great, but be sure to leave a comment and let me know what you think!

Looking to the Future

In the near future, along with creating great new themes, I will be focusing on improving theme functionality through the addition of Custom Shortcodes and Page Templates. With loads of shortcodes and page templates to choose from, managing your blog’s design will be quick and easy. My question for you is: What shortcodes and page templates would you most like to see? If you have a request, now is the time to let me know!

The source is fantastic! I hope you can improve all the themes to support the new menu in WordPress 3.0! On what shortcodes and templates are you already working on?

  2. TheSource is gorgeous and professional…like all your themes, Nick. I’ve recommended Elegant Themes to several of my marketing and public relations clients. Thanks for the great work.

  3. altinkum says:

just perfect, l would love to see news, magazine themes like telegraph.co.uk or smiliar with many wonderful options

    • Bonaventura says:

Yes, actually a true ‘multi-column’ (let’s say five or six) theme would be interesting, sort of ‘newspaper’ style.
We know you can do that, Nick, we do know :)

  4. altinkum says:

well not to forget buddypress nick, would be nice her on elegant themes

  5. Rob says:

Very nice design. Not sure I could use it mind you, but looks good.

  6. Arslan says:

Create a simple theme. For example..

    http://www.renkliteneke.com/wp-content/uploads/full-preview.jpg

We are waiting.. :) Good works..

  7. Ian Davies says:

Nick, this is “the one” I’ve been waiting for and it’s even better than I’d hoped – and I knew it would be fantastic!

I have a couple of sites I can get to work on now.

Just keep these outstanding themes comin’ chap!

  8. John says:

Nick, fantastic looking theme. I noticed an odd behavior in the theme (probably originating from the jquery slider). If you scroll to the bottom of the home page and wait a few seconds, the page jumps up on you.

  9. Scylderon says:

Nick, the auto-scrolling timer in the slider appears to not adjust itself if the user scrolls through manually. If each frame lasts ten seconds, and I after five seconds, I scroll to the next frame, I don’t get to look at that frame for the full ten seconds, but only five. Fix this!

  10. Jesse says:

I think you mean “*pique* your visitor’s interest”.

    :P

  11. Lethality says:

Blown away by your designs man, great work.

  12. Jesse says:

Oh and PLEASE don’t forget my multiauthor blog idea!

  13. Zach says:

Thanks! im making a website tomrrow and this will be the theme!

  14. Bonaventura says:

Hi Nick, great template as usual, also the white skin is very nice, thanks for the good work you always bring to us!
Just a couple of notes: on clicking the pagination it gives an error on the third page, but maybe that’s because of no content (but it shouldn’t show more pages in that case, right?)
Also, is it possible to use a longer (horizontally speaking) logo name if not ‘description’ is used for the blog/site?
    Thanks!

  15. Tomb says:

    No green this time around?

  16. steve says:

NICE! I was waiting for the green one! Anyway, This is by far the best one! Great job! Now, see if i can remember my log in :)

  17. sbuster says:

    perfect. nice work nick

  18. This theme is beautiful. It has a clean design and still shows a lot information. Sweet!

  19. Nick,

Nice job! You had asked what page templates and shortcodes would be useful, so I thought I’d toss out a few ideas. Some of these you may have, but I don’t seem them in the demo.

    Page Templates
    * The most important to me (I suggested this on another post) would be to have a great product page layout like you have on this site. A screenshot scroller, or better yet a lightbox image gallery, features list, etc.
    * Gallery page feature for every single theme
    * Post/Page rating feature for every single theme
    * Built in basic social bookmarking for every theme (Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Google Buzz, etc). Just direct links are fine we can always use plugins for fancier features.
    * Single article page that also displays related posts
    * Email contact form
    * Support request form (like email but with a a couple extra fields (maybe let us configure them in the admin panel)
    * Site map
    * 404 page with basic sitemap listing (categories, tags, etc.)
    * Another thing that would be cool and I have no idea why someone hasn’t already done this (or maybe they have and I don’t know about it), is to simply keep track of the number of hits to each article / page and have a widget that displays popular posts based on that. AFAICT, we need to use complex plugins that poll wordpress.com stats or google analytics stats for that.

    Shortcodes
    * Not sure exactly what you were thinking of including here, but related posts (above) could be implemented as a short-code.
    * The “product page” features could be a series of shortcodes (featured bullet list, feature with thumbnail)
    * Shortcode to make default WP post gallery use lightbox
    * Social bookmarking and sitemap stuff could be shortcodes as well. Just depends on how you prefer to implement them.

    • Oh, one more thing that I actually think should float to the top of the list. It would be great if you had several different home page layouts to choose from. Either page templates or home.php.

This would allow for “blog themes” to become “CMS” or “magazine” themes and vice versa. These would be dead-simple to build as long as you’ve been pretty consistent in your css style names across your themes. You’d basically just be distributing each of your other theme’s home.php (or index.php) with each theme so users can choose their preferred layout.

    Another impressive theme. Top work!

Just in time for a magazine site I’m re-doing.

Just one thing, the distribution is missing a “screenshot.png” file.

  24. earaiden says:

Perfect, I love it, the new theme for my site a:) thanks

  25. jacqui says:

    Great theme!

Shortcodes I’d like to see: column layouts, pullquotes, drop/feature caps, dividers, div(top), fancy graduated fill boxes, coloured note boxes, information boxes etc. whole page layout (without sidebar) and option to add different sidebars.

    Thanks :-)

  26. This theme is amazing! I’ve been waiting for just the right theme for a while and I definitely think this is the one. Great work Nick!

  36. Nick – this is one of the best yet! Thanks for all your great designs. I can hardly wait to see this one “in action”!!!

  37. RichardSouth says:

    Beautiful design :-)

On the subject of page templates…

I’d like to see a couple of dedicated product pages. Perhaps one that features a single product with a couple of pull-out quotes and maybe room for a demo video. In some ways it might look a bit like a nice big ad.

A second product page might be more of a listing style.

I don’t think there’s a huge need for contact-style templates since there are some truly outstanding plugins that handle that sort of thing.

I wonder whether there’s much scope for a “what’s new since you last visited” page ? Not sure how it would work, but the idea appeals. Maybe this would work better as shortcode that would pull in a defined number of post links ?

Likewise I’d like a Twitter shortcode that pulled in a nice graphic-based Twitter feed of your last tweet and a “follow me” link. Ideally that might go in place of a banner ad, or perhaps into pages.

I also think there’s a place for empty pages. That is, templates that are stripped of absolutely everything: no comments, no heading, no date, no author, no sidebar etc. I’ve found myself in need of these quite a few times.

  38. Phil says:

    Awesome.Theme.

Would love a green color scheme.
Or a black one with white categories bar.

  39. Myyrle says:

    Hi Nick !

Great theme ! Always a pleasure to see your new creations.

You asked which template page we wanna see in your theme ? I think a lot of people would adore a page contact with a form to fill (like wootheme did in the last released themes).

  40. Yojance says:

That blue one is hot. Another Great theme.

  41. shawn says:

I’d really like to see some new themes that take advantage of the new post_types. Specifically you could build themes that have separately styled video and podcast sections.

Maybe an event calendar system. Heck you could even go as far as to build a post_type within the theme that looks and functions like a forum.

With 3.0 the options are almost limitless.

    • Nick says:

Yeah, I am definitely excited about the possibilities. There will certainly be some new things developed around custom post types here at ElegantThemes.

  42. shawn says:

almost forgot… Please add the hooks to use the new 3.0 menu system. I am already using it in all my theme’s but have not tried to style them as nice as you are yet.

  43. Joe says:

    Nice themes for game sites!

  44. Monchee says:

  45. Deep Titanic says:

I Love your themes ! Can we have an e shop?

It’s the top of my list …Thank-you so much!!

    • Nick says:

I’m still planning to develop the ecommerce theme. Right now I am just waiting for the updated custom post types being introduced in 3.0, which will allow great functionality for such a theme.

  46. iPad says:

Fantastic Theme, just love your themes ;)

    ~AA~

  50. TanTan says:

Excellent theme, Nick! I am using it for my blog right now, at http://techexplorer.org/blog!
However, i found a bug- whenever you play a quicktime movie you must scroll down.

Otherwise it’s a great theme! Keep up the good work!

Also can you use WP plug-ins with Elegant Themes?

  54. e-commerce says:

Hi Nick, Amazing work! is there a way (third-party or otherwise) to accept payments using your templates/wordpress that YOU can recommend?

I want to sign up, but this is the one thing that would seal the deal. Great templates plus e-commerce. Especially with the the source.

  72. Kory says:

Having problems with the thumbnail on the featured slider. Whenever I had something to the slide the background where the picture becomes white, so If I had a large image it still doesnt gradient to black like the demo site does. I keep the image in reasonable height and long width and it still doesn’t match. Clicked full size in the featured image section and everything but still no luck. What’s going on?
