New Theme: eNews

It has been a common request that I make an elegant and professional “news” theme. Sometimes it’s hard to tell what people mean when they call a design “magazine” or “news” style, but to me it simply means creating a theme that can present a lot of content on the homepage in a clean and userfriendly manner. Unlike my previous release (Bold), which showcased a more stylized and abstract design, eNews is a exercise in crispness and subtelty. I tried to make it simple and orginized with an attention to subtle details. You can preview the theme here, or check out the gallery page for more info.

Features

1. Increased Control – This theme was co-developed by Yuriy, one of ElegantTheme’s main forum techs. With two minds at work there was more time to focus on the theme’s backend, which resulted in some new options not previously seen in my other themes. For example, even the Featured Articles slider on the homepage has several variables that can be adjusted, including 1) Choosing which category to use for your featured articles display. 2) Choosing whether to enable/disable featured articles as a whole 3) Deciding whether you would like featured articles to be excluded from the main loop on the homepage. 4) Adjusting the animation type used when switching between articles. 5) Enabling/disabling auto rotation of featured articles 6) Changing how fast the articles auto-rotate if enabled 7) Choosing how many featured articles to display, and more. In the future I hope to continue to expand on my theme’s backend and give similar control to all aspect of the blog.

2. Custom Fields No Longer Necessary – If you don’t want to add thumbnail custom fields to all of your posts then you can enable automatic thumbnail detection, which will grab the first image in your post and use it to generate your thumbnails.

3. Multiple Color Schemes – eNews comes with 5 color schemes to choose from, including Blue, Turquoise, Purple, Green and Red. You can switch between color schemes at any time via the eNews Theme Options Page.

Overall I think you will notice an improved user experience when setting up this theme due to the backend changes, and I hope to continue to improve my theme’s userfriendliness in future updates.

Please let me know what you think of the design, I appreciate your comments!

    Beautiful and original looking theme.

One small issue when viewing on Mac OS with both Safari and Firefox. What I see in my browser on the demo looks different than the screenshots. The Featured Articles slider text is getting squashed as if its in a narrow column causing the text to extend down past the slider area.

Latest Mac OS X, Safari 4.0.3, FF 3.5.2

    Hey Nick-
Have to say that this is my absolute fav so far, even topping eBusiness. Just a quick question (which will be reposted in the forum when the section is put up): What is the standard size images should be for this layout for everything to fit nicely?
    Thanks in advance.

    • admin says:

If you want to keep it simple a 300x300px image should work pretty well in all areas. If you want to get more specific I might go with a 291x172px image.

  16. Anto says:

Nick, i have to say man. I always come on and drop a comment on a theme i think looks good, but this is f**king amazing.

The color schemes are amazing. The colors are nice and soft, really smooth on the eyes, and everything just works perfectly.

Just want to say, well done man, one of the best out of the lot. In my eyes. Keep up the good work man.

into the features articles section the image is ok but the text of the post isn’t on the right side of the photo…!!

you can check it on my test page http://www.ipedia.gr

with Opera browser everything is ok!!!

  18. Indrek says:

Looking good, but there’s still one flaw (with all ElegantThemes themes)

Frontpage headlines are all partial, even in large Featured Articles box.

Don’t you think it’s bad for SEO?

  19. Clint says:

  25. LA100RRA says:

Are incompatibility with the Adsense Manager plugin, when turn on, stops working panel management theme.

    Sorry for my english :P

    • admin says:

This means that the plugin is injecting javascript into the entire wp-admin area, which would account for the conflict. This is not a good practice. I have no control over this – their plugin should only call the javascript files while viewing their options page. Instead their code is being placed into the eNews options page as well, which messes things up. Unfortunately I have no control over how the thousands of plugins out there are coded, but you could always try contacting the creator and suggesting that they revise it.

  26. LA100RRA says:

ofcourse, only said to be aware, I think we could turn off the plugin to set the theme, once the configuration is ok, re-activated the plugin and ready ;)

  27. Ghenis says:

  52. Francesco says:

Hello, I’m very interested in this theme but before subscribing I would like to know what does it happen when you post news with no images. In your theme’s preview homepage, every post has got images, so everyone has a square thumb on one side or a rectangular down. In my blog I’ll have images but also several posts without any image so how would they look?
    Thanx a lot, kind regards,
    Francesco

Would it be possible that you modify one of your themes (have to choose one before) a bit?

If possible we could talk about some requirements to the site.

    Would be nice!

    Kind regards from Berlin

Can this option be found easy in the css codes for someone who isn’t an expert?

    Thanks for your help.

hi,I just want to ask, a very simple question, but sorry if it’s become some silly question.

Just install this theme, and it’s look so awesome! I like it.
But I didn’t know how to change the image (NEWSBLOG — that write in the themes), I try to find in my wordpress and still can’t find the link?

I wanna change it, with my logo.

    Could you help me? thanks.
    with some tutorial might be.

    Sorry, just a beginner here.

  69. PrivacyCast says:

Figured it out– the issue occurs when the image for a featured post is not the expected width. Workaround is to just make the images/featured-overlay.png file a completely transparent image rather than the white grad.
